Freelancing update

Since July last year, I’ve had the privilege to work with a number of organisations both here and overseas as a freelancer, outside of my day job.

I have freelanced on and off over the years while still holding down a full-time job, but the last six or so months have seen me step things up, working on a greater variety of projects — all in addition to my 9-5 job (or in my case, 6 – 3).

Interesting tech, an introduction to new tools and techniques, and working with interesting people are all major reasons why I choose to do this.

But, I am tired and I need a break. So with a heavy heart, I have just informed my clients that I’ll be winding down freelancing for the rest of 2023. They’ve been so understanding, and I really appreciate their support. I will continue to write blog posts for one U.S.-based client, but the more intense ‘traditional’ tech writing needs to go on hold for a while.

I would like to re-shape my professional life, but I’m still working out what that will actually look like. At this stage, I need to take a step back and focus on my health and wellbeing, and to open up some extra time to explore some things outside of work.

My work and career are a huge part of my identity, and that won’t change. But I just need to get the balance right.
